By hosting your own server you have complete control of everything. Companies I worked with chose to do this so they knew what was going on with the server at all times - they didn't have to worry about a fire, explosion, theft, etc. I've worked with a hosting company that had an explosion in their server room - and our server was down for over a week. Usually, something like this is the reason a business will decide to host their own server. I strongly recommend against doing this if you're a small business. you would need a server - $$$ you need the email software - server edition - $$$ probably need a T-1 line ($500-900 a month) you would need an IT person capable of taking of the server and software (figure $50,000 or more salary plus benefits) how many people are you talking about? - less than 100 and it probably makes no sense
